FAQ

General Information

Answer

Cyanoacrylate adhesives are sometimes known generically as instant glues, CA glues, power glues or superglues (although "Super Glue" is a trade name). Cyanoacrylates are a family of strong fast-acting adhesives with industrial, medical, and household uses.

Unlike traditional adhesives which are water-based, cyanoacrylate glue is composed of an acrylic resin. The main ingredient in cyanoacrylate glue is cyanoacrylate, which is an acrylic monomer that transforms to a plastic state after curing.

Their effectiveness in bonding metal and general versatility have made them popular among modeling and miniatures hobbyists. CA glues can be used to combine anything from metal to plastic, along with many other substrates like ceramic, porcelain, fiberglass, cork, neoprene/rubber, pvc family, abs family, leather, glass, diecast, alloys, aluminum, brass, graphite and too many others to list.

Answer

There are many brands of CA glues on the market. Many have been on the market, unchanged, for a very long time. Dr. Mike's and Lightning Bond glues are all new technology glues, that we continue to improve. These are not the same old CA glues, rebranded, like most others in the market. We designed our adhesives using the latest chemical knowledge to make adhesives that will actually bond, the way you want, on the materials you need. And, many modelers tout that our adhesives don't dry up in 1 to 4 uses like other CA glues do. We have 4 adhesives that will cover virtually all your project needs: Dr. Mike's Model-n' Crafter's Glue, Dr. Mike's Model-n' Crafter's Glue - Brush (thickest viscosity) that is foam safe, Dr. Mike's Model-n' Crafter's Glue #2 (medium viscosity) and Lightning Bond (between thin and medium viscosity). It's our method of distillation that really separates us from over the counter brands to produce the purest CA's in the world.

And, you get peace of mind with our Money Back Satisfaction Guarantee and the only written "No Dry Up" guarantee in the industry.

Answer

Most CA glues react to moisture to cure, it's kind of like the second ingredient in a 2 part epoxy whereas Dr. Mike's Glue is the 1st part. Which is why they tend to glue fingers and hands so well. Dr. Mike's Model N' Crafters Glues work the same, the less glue you apply the quicker it will react with the moisture in the air.

Now, on the other hand, Lightning Bond works almost like an anerobic. An Anerobic works on lack of oxygen, not so much on moisture contact. So, for Lightning Bond to work most effectively, put a small amount between your 2 surfaces and squeeze together for a short period. It will tack very quickly and final cure within a few hours to a clear finish.

Answer

CA glues can 'fog' surrounding areas to where you apply the adhesive. This fogging effect, or white powdery residue, is called blooming. It is created from the cyanoacrylate glue volatizes and reacts with the moisture in the environment and leaves the white residue. It is usually most visible on clear plastic like airplane canopies.

Answer

Sure are! Here is a growing list of little tidbits, tricks and suggestions. Don't directly use the glue's bottle nozzle on the materials you are bonding. Huh? Well, yes you most certainly can use the bottle nozzle, just make sure you cut very little off to make sure the opening is as small as possible. But, this can introduce contaminants and accelerants to the glue, prematurely setting it, which is why we offer replacement Fine and Medium extender tips. To dispense glue, use a push pin, sewing needle, paper clip, or drafting ruling pen. Tilt the glue bottle just enough to dispense a very small droplet onto your tool, then put the glue exactly where you need it. You need very LITTLE glue for best adhesion, and it will wick into the joint. Be careful, these glues are much thinner viscosity then you're probably used to.

Use some blue tac or hobby vise to hold your gluing tool (paper clip, push pin, etc). Apply your glue droplet to the push pin, needle's end. This frees both hands to position your materals together and move into the gluing tool to apply. Again our Fine and Medium extender tips are very convenient to use if you are working on structure kits and building kits and you want to keep moving along.

All Dr. Mike's products are very resistant to blooming (frosting), but you can reduce blooming further by ensuring you are in a well ventilated area, using less adhesive, and using Lightning Blast to cure the adhesive faster.

Answer

There is no need to cut the tip, as the new tips are ready to use. All you have to do is unscrew the stem on the cap. There is a little pin inside the cap that keeps the tip of the bottle from clogging.

Make sure the material you are bonding is clean and free of dirt, rust, grease, old glue, etc. Clean with an acetone-based solvent (i.e. nail polish remover). Petroleum based cleaner solvents will prevent Lightning Bond from working properly.

If the materials being repaired do not form an airtight fit, you may need to use Lightning Fill to eliminate any gaps.

Apply a very small amount of Lightning Bond to one of the materials being bonded, one side only. The thinner the layer, the better the hold. For absorbent or large surfaces, more adhesive may be required and clamped. Some surfaces may require being roughened with fine sand paper.

Press firmly together, allowing setting before use. Most materials will set within 2 minutes and cure completely within 8 hours at room temperature.

Answer

Open the bottle and cut below the tip shoulder for plenty of filler flow. Lightning Fill is used in combination with Lightning Bond Glue to weld such items as leaky garden hoses, vacuum attachments, cracked PVC materials and more hard-to-repair projects. You can also reshape items and machine them immediately unlike 2 - Part epoxies that sometimes work and most times do not after waiting for hours or overnight. Lightning Filler used with Lightning Bond glue creates an instant epoxy weld on most substrates. Painting or varnishing can be accomplished after final cure.

Applications: For use on ceramics, porcelain, wood, steel, aluminum, plastic and pipe, etc. The purpose of Lightning Fill is to fill in cracks, chips, missing material, and to strengthen joints. Perfect for fixing stripped threads on any material, too.

General Instructions: Clean Surfaces. Depending on the application, you can use Lightning Fill then Lightning Bond, or in reverse.

When filling a hole, crack or stripped threads use Lightning Fill first, then Lightning Bond. This should be one in thin layers always curing with liquid Lightning Bond last.

When applying to the outside of a pipe (external repair), you would use Lightning Bond first, then Lightning Fill so the fill can attach itself to the Lightning Bonds wet surface.

Answer

Our BLAST accelerator is formulated for Dr. Mike's and Lightning bond adhesives. It is mostly used for those stubborn bonding materials. Think of it as a pre-applied primer before adding glue. Brush or Q-tip Blast accelerator to both material surfaces to be pressed against each other to be repaired. Let both surfaces air dry for 10 seconds while replacing Blast bottle cap [very evaporative]. While holding your new or broken pieces together like you want them to bond, apply sparingly 1 to 2 drops of Glue depending on the size/scale of the parts to be bonded. Example: A Figurine sword tip is broken off on a porcelain, resin or metal solider. Brush the Blast sparingly on both swords broken tips. Hold together as original and with a very small drop of glue placed on the tip of a small paper clip, place droplet on repair area and it is instantly repaired and without damage to paint on molded plastic or die-cast figures and it’s exactly aligned like new. This technique is not widely known and is an excellent, no mess, bonding method using accelerators. You have already positioned the new kit pieces and/or repair pieces exactly how they were before breakage in advance and then you're adding a drop of glue that is wicked into your repair area. I personally believe it’s stronger than the traditional glue method of placing glue on one substrate and pressing the other one to it… and with Lightning Blast, usually no flashing/white chalking occurs and dries clear. IPMS & AMPS Modeler’s and Model train lovers like it for no flashing on aircraft canopies and passenger car windows since it dries clear. I might add it dries clear on all painted surfaces and might need a brush stroke of Dull coat for authentication.

You can use the pre-applied Blast on anything such as sneakers, terracotto, pvc, abs, woods and most items around the house that you are having issues with and will not bond with just Dr. Mike’s or Lightning Bond Liquids. * Most of the above listed items I’ve just mentioned will NOT require our Blast but there are always some plastics that require it thanks to Recycling era we live in.

Note: Accelerants may adversely affect some materials so test surfaces first. Using other cheaper brands of Kicker-Accelerants with cheaper low cost CA Glues can cause permanent disfigurement and that is why we have formulated Blast for Dr. Mike’s Glue products. Use other Kicker / accelerants at your own risk with Dr. Mike’s products.

* Tip : We supply a standard office push pin to seal the bottle with every Dr. Mike’s Model-n’ Crafters Glue Product. Tilt bottle slowly and squeeze just a tad so a droplet of glue transfers to the push pin. Don’t worry it won’t dry up for minutes on the push pin. Now hold pieces together with applied Blast like stated above and it will wick into those pieces you’re trying to build or repair like soldering a copper pipe joint. Be sure to use enough but not too much.

Answer

Dr. Mike's Glues:

Do not use the plastic shipping cap once opened. Discard it immediately. Only use the push pin to seal. Prior to using push pin, you can tap bottle down on table to clear glue from nozzle. You may want to leave it sit to drain more glue from nozzle before sealing with push pin.

Lightning Bond:

The bottles come ready to use. The caps have pins built in, do not discard. As with Dr. Mike's glues, you can tap bottle on table to clear nozzle and let sit to drain more glue prior to capping. Wiping off the threads before placing cap on makes cap easier for opening.

Lightning Spray Blast:

Just use plastic cap to cover when completed using. Do not keep within at least 3 feet of glues, as vapor can prematurely set glue.

Answer

Always store Dr. Mike's and Lightning Bond glues in a cool dry place. You can use refrigeration to extend shelf life, especially for unopened bottles, but is not necessary. Never store in direct light or heat. Ensure you do not store Lightning Blast Accelerator within 3 feet of glues and PLEASE do NOT store Lightning Blast in refrigerators.
